Listening Practices for Audiobooks

Audiobooks are one of the best gifts of modern technology. With it, there is no boring moment. Many Singaporeans consider audiobooks because they are not only entertaining but also informative. When we consider road trips, we bring along our favorite books and playlist but what if we can compress the two and make it one? That is the beauty of audiobooks.


Audio has been in public libraries and schools since 30s. The advent of videocassettes followed by compact discs and DVDs paved way to audio recording but only of plays and poetry rather than books. It was not until early 80s that book audio recording attracted patrons and retailers.

Now, audiobooks are a common medium in schools and other learning institutions. The good news is that there are many available formats like .mp3, .wma, .acc and many others. In fact, in America audiobooks have been utilized to teach kids to read thereby increasing comprehension. Here in Singapore, there are many schools utilizing it too. We cannot deny how useful audiobooks are these days.

With the help of audiobooks, we will retain listening practices like:


  • Replaying: Replaying will depend on one’s degree of interest and attention. However, audiobooks encourages repeating specific segments more than once and this allows the book to be understood properly at the same time retain it. Replaying is easy and hustle-free.


  • Multitasking: There is no doubt that many people consider audiobooks because it allows them to do other tasks while listening. Audiobooks encourage multitasking. We only need to plug our headphones and start exploring the book.


  • Learning: Audiobooks especially the “unabridged” one (the uncut or unedited one) exist so people will learn about other people’s worlds through their exact words.


  • Entertainment: As mentioned earlier, an audiobook can be entertaining especially if it is our favourite book. Audiobook is a popular form of entertainment for travellers.

Listening to an audiobook is an enriching experience. The crucial thing here is choosing the right books to download. There are myriad of audiobooks. Famous audiobooks these days include Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman, Janet Evanovich’s The Shell Game, Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Stephen King’s Drunken Fireworks, Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, Shane Dawson’s I Hate Myselfie, Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach and many more.

If we want other audiobooks, we can freely search online and download it. The important thing here is we utilize its use and encourage learning amongst family members and peers.
