Heat Related Illness

The thought of summer excites many people. Summer is the perfect time to do the things we want but it is important to note that we should take precautions because summer can also cause serious illness. But it doesn’t have to be that scary if we know what to do and what not to do. Before going out, it is vital to be well informed about heat related illnesses.

Who can get sick under the sun. No one is exempted when we speak of heat related illnesses. As long as you spend time under the sun, you can be a victim. Heat related illnesses hit when the body is not able to control its temperature. Heat related illnesses include heat cramps, heat edema, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Kind of sun-caused illnesses. Heat cramps are characterized by muscle pains in the hands, arms, legs and abdomen. Heat edema, on the other hand, is characterized by sweating, intense redness of the face and swelling of the hands, legs and feet. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy perspiration, weakness, fatigue, dizziness and damp skin. Lastly, the symptoms of heat stroke consist of confusion, dizziness, hallucination, chills and pounding headache. Heat strokes can cause death or permanent disability if medical treatment is not given quickly.

How to protect yourself. Now that we know the gravity of the situation, it is best to stop and cool off when we feel something is wrong. Remember that prevention is better than cure. When we have activities planned, bringing of water and other fluids can make a big difference. Make sure to drink plenty. Another thing that we should remember is to wear sunscreens or lotions.

What to wear this summer season. Clothing is a crucial factor as well so if you plan to go out, select light garments. If it can be helped, avoid going out from 11 AM to 4 PM because it is the hottest time of the day. If you are used to go out alone, think twice. At least have someone accompany you wherever you go so when something happens, you have someone to hold on to.
